SPOKANE, Wash. - Seattle U women's tennis finished up their last match of the weekend and final match before Western Athletic Conference play on Sunday when they took on Idaho at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash. The Vandals came out confident during doubles play and never let up, winning in a decisive 7-0 sweep.
Idaho started the match strong by claiming the doubles point. Juniors Martina Asciuto and Jillian Rasmussen (4-6) were the closest pairing to victory as they took on Maggie Chen and Katherine Jhang. Fellow juniors Alisa Sabotic and Aranza Alvarez Sanabria (3-6) teamed up for the first time this season when they took on Marta Magalhaes and Saffron Dowse, while sophomore Jade Lancaster and junior Hannah Grossman (1-6) faced off against Melissa Huchet and Laura Spataro.
Lancaster (2-6, 6-3, 8-10) was close to picking up her second victory of the season as she pushed her opponent Jhang to a third set. Rasmussen (1-6, 4-6) put together a competitive second set against Dowse after starting off slow, while senior Peggy Rooke (4-6, 1-6) started the match strong but cooled off against Huchet. Senior Michelle Bader (3-6, 2-6) faced off against Chen, while Asciuto (1-6, 0-6) matched up with Magalhaes and Sabotic (2-6, 3-6) battled hard against Spataro.
"We did a lot better job in the doubles matches today and gave it our all in the singles," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "We are slowly starting to put the pieces of the puzzle together and look forward to our next match."
The Redhawks' next match will be their WAC conference opener with New Mexico State in St. George, Utah on Mar. 20.
