ST. GEORGE, Utah - Seattle U women's tennis opened its WAC season bright and early on Saturday morning against New Mexico State in St. George, Utah. The Redhawks came out strong in the doubles matches and came away with the doubles point but they were unable to take that momentum into singles play. The Aggies would go on to take 5 of 6 singles matches, claiming the victory at 5-2.
Junior Hannah Grossman and Senior Peggy Rooke (6-2) paired up against Chloe Gavino and Bella Nguyen, earning their second victory of the season, while senior Hannah Gianan and sophomore Jade Lancaster (6-2) claimed their first victory as a doubles team over Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga by the same result. Juniors Martina Asciuto and Aranza Alvarez Sanabria (2-6) were unable to pull off the doubles sweep as they fell to opponents Lucija Josipovic and Miranada Bishard.
Rooke (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) earned her second singles victory of the season as she defeated Gavino in three sets while Alvarez Sanabria (6-7, 5-7) was the next closest Redhawk to victory as she put together two very competitive sets against Josipovic. Gianan (3-6, 4-6) matched up against Challa, while Grossman (6-7, 4-6) battled against opponent Kalaga and Ascuito (2-6, 5-7) was close to forcing a third set against Nguyen after starting the match off slow. Bishard was awarded the victory by default over Lancaster.
"It was a tough day for our team but they are tough and made the most out of the situation," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "We will do our best to recover and we look forward to our second conference match tomorrow."
The Redhawks will stay in St. George for one more day as they matchup with Dixie State on the Trailblazer Tennis Courts at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
