SEATTLE – Seattle University softball scored six runs in the seventh inning to topple Portland State for a second straight day on Saturday at the Husky Classic. SU also fell at No. 7 UW, 4-1, at Husky Softball Stadium.
Against PSU, the Redhawks (11-13) got started early. Olivia Viggiano doubled to open the game and then Madison Cathcart drew a walk. After a wild pitch, Cherise Silvan singled to plate Viggiano for a 1-0 advantage. The Vikings tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first.
Following a scoreless second frame, SU put together a two-run rally in the third. Ally Choate singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bailey Thompson hit a shot just inside the third-base line for an RBI double and a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Stephanie Merwin smashed a liner to third that brought in Thompson to expand the margin. PSU came back with three runs in its half of the inning, though, taking a 4-3 edge.
The contest remained that way until the top of the seventh, when the SU offense exploded for six runs. Cathcart walked to lead off and Thompson drew her own base on balls. Silvan successfully put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Merwin singled on the infield, but PSU held the runners as the bases became loaded with one out. Grace Dudden hit a sharp grounder to first, where the Vikings' throw home was late and wide, allowing two runs to come in for a 6-4 lead. Kamryn Coleman pinch-hit and drilled a triple to centerfield, plating two more runs. Brooke Milder followed with a pinch-hit RBI single. She then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Viggiano's groundout to short brought Milder in for a 10-4 score.
Shi Smith kept the Vikings off the board in the seventh to end the game.
Nine different Redhawks tallied a hit, led by Viggiano and Merwin with two apiece. Cathcart walked three times. Smith threw three scoreless innings in relief to get the victory.
The Redhawks challenged the Huskies on Saturday, holding the powerful UW lineup to just four runs on eight hits. The run total matches the Huskies' second-fewest in a game this season.
