SEATTLE – Seattle University softball rallied past Portland State, 5-3, on Friday at the Husky Classic. The Redhawks also fell at No. 8 Washington, 5-0, at Husky Softball Stadium.

In the first game of the weekend, it took until the third inning to find a run. PSU homered to get on the board, but in the bottom of the frame, Madison Cathcart drilled a solo homer to right to make it 1-all.

Following a scoreless fourth, PSU found another run to go back ahead. Cathcart walked to start a rally in SU's half of the fifth. Bailey Thompson singled and Cherise Silvan doubled in the tying run. The Redhawks left the bases loaded in search of another run.

The Vikings again scored a single run in the sixth for a 3-2 edge. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Olivia Viggiano and Ally Choate walked. Cathcart was intentionally walked to fill the bases for Bailey Thompson. The senior lined a base hit to left, driving in a pair of runs to take the lead. With two outs, Stephanie Merwin deposited a double to plate an insurance run to make it 5-3.

Carley Nance earned a strikeout and two groundouts to claim the win for SU. She pitched 2.1 innings in relief of Shi Smith, giving up just two hits and no runs.

Thompson went 3-4 with two RBIs. Cathcart homered, while Silvan and Merwin each tallied RBI doubles.

Against the powerful Huskies, SU was outmatched by pitcher Gabbie Plain. She allowed two hits across seven innings to keep UW in control. Cathcart doubled in the seventh, giving her 55 for her Seattle U career. She is tied for second in WAC history and needs just two more two-baggers to tie the all-time conference record.

Stefanie Madrigal pitched five innings and allowed five runs, while striking out seven.

SU will face UW tomorrow at 3 p.m. before taking on PSU at 5 p.m.
