SEATTLE – Seattle U women's tennis opened the 2021 season Thursday with a short drive across the city to take on the University of Washington at Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. The unbeaten Huskies started off hot and did not let up, winning in a decisive 7-0 sweep on their home courts.
"Today was a tough start to our season," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "However, the women competed well against a very strong opponent. We are all happy to back on the court playing again and are looking forward to our next game."
In singles play, junior Hannah Grossman put up two very competitive sets against Washington's Zoey Weil, finishing 3-6, 2-6, while fellow junior Aranza Alvarez Sanabria (3-6, 0-6) started off well but fell short to opponent Tara Chilton. Junior Jillian Rasmussen (1-6, 2-6) faced off against Sarah-Maude Fortin, while senior Hannah Gianan (2-6, 0-6) battled 74th-ranked Vanessa Wong, and sophomore Jade Lancaster (0-6, 1-6) faced off against Sedona Gallagher. Rounding out the field was junior Martina Asciuto with a final of 1-6, 2-6 against the Huskies' Yolanda Lin.
UW opened the day by claiming the doubles point. Asciuto and Grossman paired up against Weil and Chang, falling 0-6, while Hannah Gianan and Peggy Rooke suffered the same result against Wong and Gallagher. Lancaster and Rasmussen put together the best doubles performance of the day, losing 2-6 against Fortin and Lin.
The Redhawks' next match will be a rematch with the Huskies next Thursday at Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
