TUCSON, Ariz. – Seattle University softball dropped a pair of game on its first day at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona. SU fell to BYU, 4-0, and then to Colorado State, 6-3 in eight innings, on Thursday.

Alyson Matriotti got scoring started in the CSU game, hitting a solo home run in the third inning. The senior now has two career homers as a Redhawk.

Stefanie Madrigal pitched four scoreless innings before the Rams put together a three-run rally in the fifth to take the lead. In the sixth, Madrigal induced a key 1-6-3 double play to help keep the score 3-1.

Olivia Viggiano started the sixth with a base hit and with two outs, Bailey Thompson smashed a tying shot over the fence in right-centerfield.

Shi Smith pitched the seventh and tallied an inning-ending strikeout to bring SU to bat with a chance to win the game. The Redhawks went down in order, though, sending the contest to extra innings.

The Rams came through with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth. Matriotti lined an RBI double in the SU half, but the Redhawks could not bring in any more runs.

Thompson and Matriotti led the attack with two hits each. Viggiano, Cherise Silvan, and Stephanie Merwin each contributed one hit.

In the game against BYU, both teams put runners aboard in the early innings, but the pitchers kept the contest scoreless through two frames. Madison Cathcart and Lily Garcia each tallied singles, but the Redhawks could not produce a run. The Cougars scored twice in the third before adding a run in both the third and fourth. Merwin singled in the fourth and Silvan claimed a bunt hit in the sixth, but BYU stymied any more action and came away with the decision.

SU plays two games tomorrow, taking on Colorado State and third-ranked Arizona.
