DENVER – Seattle University softball has been voted as favorites in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Tuesday. Madison Cathcart and Ally Choate were picked Preseason All-WAC.
The Redhawks were voted favorites to win the WAC for the second straight year. They earned four first-place votes and 32 points. New Mexico State was second with three first-place votes and 31 points. Utah Valley and California Baptist were third and fourth, respectively. Grand Canyon, Dixie State, and Tarleton rounded out the poll.
Cathcart hit .294 in 24 games last season. The Longview, Wash., native hit two home runs and four doubles as she tallied 20 hits and 11 walks. Cathcart holds SU career records in home runs (38), doubles (50), walks (109), extra-base hits (89), and putouts (1,432). In 2021, she will have the chance to take over the top spot in RBIs (161), runs (113), at-bats (542), and games started (183). Cathcart has been a preseason WAC pick in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Choate missed time due to injury, appearing in 14 games. The native of Yelm, Wash., posted 11 hits and scored four runs. In her three seasons at SU, Choate ranks ninth in runs with 92 and 10th in hits with 153. She has also been a preseason WAC pick in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
The Redhawks remain defending WAC regular-season and tournament champions from the 2019 season. They return every starter from the 2020 squad. SU will announce its spring schedule in the next week.
