SEATTLE – Seattle U women's golf put together one of their best seasons ever in 2019-20, compiling a slew of new school records in just seven fall and spring tournaments.
"As always, this team continues to impress both on and off the golf course," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "Our new additions to the team this year had a tremendous impact on our success and elevated the team to entirely new levels."
After kicking off the fall season at the Cougar Cup on Sept. 16-17 in Pullman, Wash., the Redhawks placed second of 14 teams at the Boston College Intercollegiate on Sept. 23-24, leading the field with a combined 37 birdies. Senior Krystal Hu tied for third place overall in that tournament, while junior Keisha Lugito finished in a tie for fifth place out of 81 total golfers. The team followed that up with a stellar third-place win at the Rose City Collegiate, which lasted from Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Freshman Azumi Arai led the way for the team, tying for eighth place in the field of 70.
Seattle U next competed at the UW Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite on Oct. 8-9 before concluding their fall season at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, hosted at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club on Oct. 14-15. The Redhawks placed second in the field of 18, with junior Kimberlee Tottori (68-74-73) taking fourth out of 95. Tottori's first round of four-under 68 is tied for the second-lowest (and second-lowest versus par) in school history. Her performance also landed her at number three in the school record books for her 36-hole total of minus-two 142, and at number three for her 54-hole total of one-under 215. Hu also joined Tottori in the top 10 scorers of the tournament, tying for seventh place. As a team, the Redhawks set new school records for lowest round and lowest round versus par, shooting a combined two-under 286 in the third round. They also clinched the second-lowest 54-hole total in program history (873) and the third-lowest 36-hole total (587).
The spring season started off with the GCU Invitational on Feb. 22-23, where the Redhawks placed fourth of 14 teams after two rounds of 18 holes. Tottori started off with a round of three-under 69 and followed it up with a minus-one 71, shooting the most birdies (10) of anyone in the tournament and clinching the lowest 36-hole total in program history. Finally, the team flew out to Kane'ohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i, and competed in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Mar. 10-11 for what turned out to be their last tournament of the 2019-20 season.
"Nobody expected our season to come to a halt like this, but we prepare this group every day to appreciate the little things in life and to pick yourself up when you encounter a difficult situation," said Chandonnet. "I am confident that they have handled this with class, and that it will only make us stronger and hungrier to compete in 2020-21. Krystal Hu, our one graduating senior, will be returning next year to complete her extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA, which is exciting for the group.
"We will play next year with a bit more appreciation for opportunity and normalcy," he finished. "I am so thankful for this team and how they represent themselves, the institution and the golf program."
