SEATTLE – Seattle U men's golf put together a solid campaign in 2019-20, breaking several school records in the span of just seven tournaments while fielding a squad of mostly underclassmen.
"It's crazy how hard our players work both on and off the course," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "This group of guys is special."
The team started off the fall season on Sept. 16-17 at an abbreviated Husky Invitational, with transfer sophomore Federico Gutierrez leading the way for the Redhawks at a tie for 13th place after shooting 72-70. As a group, Seattle U excelled on the Par 5s, shooting a combined 16-under for second-best in the field of 15 squads. They followed that performance with a phenomenal outing at the Nick Watney Invitational, which lasted from Sept. 30-Oct. 1; the team shot the lowest round (and lowest round versus par) in school history with a combined 13-under 271 in round three. Sophomore Nathan Cogswell placed fourth out of 92 total golfers in the tournament, posting a line of 72-68-63. His minus-10 203 tied his own school record for lowest 54-hole total, and his third round of 63 set a new program record for low round and low round versus par.
Next, Seattle U traveled to the Oregon State Invitational on Oct. 14-15, where they placed seventh in the field of 15, before competing in the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Oct. 21-23. Cogswell again excelled in that tournament, closing out the fall season by shooting 72-69-71 to tie for seventh place.
The spring season started on a high note, with the Redhawks finishing in third place out of 12 teams at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational on Feb. 10-11. Next, the team entered two tournaments in five days: the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Feb. 21-23 and The Joust on Feb. 24-25. In the latter competition, Seattle U placed third in the regular standings but outright won the All-Five title after scoring the best of all 13 teams on Par 4s. Sophomore Jack Rahon tied for fourth out of 85 golfers, posting rounds of 70, 68 and 76, while Cogswell tied for ninth place with a 72-70-76 performance. Cogswell also shot minus-six on Par 5s, second best in the tournament.
Seattle U's next outing, the Bandon Dunes Championship on Mar. 8-10, would be their last of the season. Cogswell excelled yet again, landing the second-lowest 36-hole total (137) in Redhawk history as well as shooting the third-lowest round (65) and third-lowest versus par in program history; that round also tied the Pacific Course record. Additionally, he had the second-best stroke average on Par 4s of all players in the tournament.
"When I think about our future, I feel very encouraged," said Chandonnet. "We have a core group of guys ready to make history and break both Seattle U and tournament records, just like Nathan did. The team is extremely thankful for the leadership of Greg Gionfriddo, who was our senior captain this year and will be sorely missed. We have learned a lot from him that we will take into next year. Big things are on the horizon for the Redhawks."
