JURUPA VALLEY, CALIF. – After two tournaments and five straight days of play, Seattle U men's golf finished up at The Joust at Goose Creek Golf Club on Tuesday, overcoming winds of 30-45 mph during the final round to place third as a team in the field of 13 while taking home the first-place trophy for the best All-Five team score.
Generally, team scores are calculated by combining the scores of the top four golfers on each team, but The Joust also awarded a bronze Spartan helmet to the team with the best total score of all five members of their squad – this time, the Redhawks reigned victorious.
"I'm so proud of the guys for winning the All-Five Competition," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "It's a tough award to win, and it says a lot about our depth – I've always been a firm believer that depth wins championships. We have a long way to go to get to where we need to be, but this is a great start."
Seattle U also came out of the tournament with the best team scoring average on Par 4s at 4.27. Omaha finished at the top of the standard team scoring, while Omaha's Witchayapat Sinsrang clinched the individual title by shooting a minus-two 208.
Sophomore Jack Rahon (70-68-76) tied for fourth place out of 85 total golfers, posting two fantastic first rounds and shooting an eagle in the third despite the turbulent winds. Classmate Nathan Cogswell (72-70-76) finished in a ninth-place tie, shooting 11 birdies and posting the tournament's second-best scoring average on Par 5s at 4.33 and totaling six under par on those holes. Fellow sophomore Federico Gutierrez (71-72-84) had a strong first day, ending in a tie for 36th place, while senior Greg Gionfriddo (77-71-81) shot an eagle in the second round and freshman Will Koepke (77-73-79) remained steady throughout.
"It's awesome to see Jack consistently put together such fantastic play," said Chandonnet. "Congratulations to him on grinding out another great finish."
The Redhawks return to action on Sunday, Mar. 8, when they kick off the three-day Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore.
