WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Seattle University men's golf junior Nathan Cogswell shot a 10-under 134 (68-66) to clinch the Northwest Open Invitational title on Tuesday at the Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash.
The Kent, Wash., native sat in a tie for sixth following Monday's first round of play, then shot a six-under 66 in the final round, making 12 pars and six birdies. Cogswell finished with 12 birdies and one eagle over the two rounds of play. His dozen birdies were second best in the field of nearly 170 competitors.
"It feels great to finally get a win," said Cogswell. "Given everything that's going on and the fact that our season got cancelled in the spring, it's nice to finally be competing again. I had a couple of tournaments before this that I used to get back into playing under competitive pressure. I finished well in my last tournament and took a couple of mental notes that I was able to use this week."
"I'm so excited for Nathan," said Seattle U Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "He works so hard, loves the game and we all knew he was ready for that breakthrough win. I know he appreciates everyone around him and will share this win with his incredible support system, which makes it even sweeter."
Cogswell's run-up to the Northwest Open title also included a pair of recent top-5 finishes. He placed fifth in the Muckleshoot Casino Washington Open on Aug. 3-4 at Meridian Valley Country Club, then followed with a fourth-place finish at the Washington Amateur held Aug. 11-13 at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
"I've been playing well since the beginning of our season back in the fall," Cogswell said. "I've been close in many events and I was finally able to finish one off down the stretch. I owe a lot of my success to my coach Greg Manley who has helped me work on my swing but also my mental game. I also owe a lot to Coach Chandonnet as well who has always been there with the best support and encouragement along with my teammates. And finally my family, who has supported me throughout my golfing career and in my personal life. I am very honored to be the champion of this years Northwest Open and I am excited to continue competing."
