BOISE, Idaho — A late surge fell short for Seattle U baseball on Sunday falling in the series finale, 12-8, and ultimately dropping the four-game set with Boise State. The Redhawks stranded 12 runners, despite trailing the Broncos in hits, 17-9.
"I'm very disappointed in our focus level this weekend," said head coach Donny Harrel. "We were not clean-on in the two most important phases of the game—defense and pitching. We need to coach better and prepare with more intent moving forward."
The Redhawk defense finished the series in Boise with 13 errors, as they committed three more in Sunday's contest.
Seattle U starter Alex McBee (1-1) was dealt the loss as he surrendered nine runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings. Desmond Parisotton tossed 3.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits, while Tyler Yeh (1.0 IP) closed the game.
Julian Kodama and Matt Boissoneault were only the Redhawks with multiple hits on the day, as Kodama went 2-for-3, while Boissoneault posted a 2-for-5 bid.
The Redhawks trailed 12-4 as they started the ninth. Grant Heiser drew a lead-off walk, before quickly advancing to third on a Nolan Jekich double. Boissoneault then singled to load the bases with one out.
The Redhawks then made it 12-5 as Heiser scored on Chase Wells' RBI, while an errant Bronco throw allowed Boissoneault to advance to second, keeping the bases loaded. The deficit was then further trimmed as Kyle Sherick drove two runs in with two-out single, scoring Jekich and Boissoneault on the play. In the next at-bat, Wells raced in from second as Gavin Rork singled to left-center.
The rally however was extinguished as Boise State recorded the final out and secured the decision.
The Redhawks opened the finale with a 4-2 lead after the two. Kodama opened the scoring in the first with sac fly, before Wells drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0. Austin Lively then plated two more in the second.
Boise State was held in check early scoring just once in first and second. Then in the third, the Broncos used a three-run home run to take a 5-4 lead, before adding four more runs in the fourth. They extended the margin again late with one in the seventh and two runs in eighth.
The Redhawks will look to bounce back next week as they are scheduled to face Saint Martin's on Wednesday.
