HONOLULU, HAWAI'I – Seattle University softball won, 8-4, at Hawai'i on Sunday afternoon. Carley Nance hit a grand slam and Bailey Thompson homered twice to lead the Redhawks to a third straight win at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
Nance started in the circle and pitched around two hits in the first. In the top of the second, Bailey Thompson led off with a home run for a 1-0 lead. Nance then doubled. A Cherise Silvan bunt single put runners at the corners. Silvan stole second base and with one out, Grace Dudden singled up the middle to plate another run. Alyson Matriotti's walk forced a pitching change and then Olivia Viggiano hit an RBI groundout for a 3-0 advantage.
Nance threw a scoreless second and then Thompson hammered another homer to start the third. Hawai'i answered with a run in the bottom of the third and tied the game with a three-run fourth frame.
Ally Choate got things going in the top of the fifth, singling on the infield. Madison Cathcart and Thompson both hit singles to load the bases for Nance. The redshirt junior drilled a grand slam over the wall in right field, putting SU up, 8-4.
Shi Smith struck out a pair in the bottom of the fifth and then tallied three more Ks in the sixth. Nance walked in the seventh, but a double play ended the frame and brought the hosts back to bat for the final time.
Thompson went 3-4 with two home runs and Nance recorded two hits, including a grand slam and a double, to go with a walk. Smith earned the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up just two hits while striking out nine.
