COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Seattle U women's tennis competed against two separate teams on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo., battling Air Force in the morning and Weber State in the afternoon for a full day of tough competition. Air Force won the first match, 5-0, while Weber State took the second contest, 4-0.
In the match against Air Force, sophomore Jillian Rasmussen and senior Peggy Rooke kicked off doubles play with a tight 4-6 final against Meredith Jones and Kristin Kerrigan of the Falcons. Junior Hannah Gianan and freshman Jade Lancaster also finished their doubles match with a score of 4-6, facing off against Air Force's TJ Fumagalli and Nadeen Lieberman. At the sophomore duo of Martina Asciuto and Hannah Grossman were tied up at 4-4 with opponents Alex Kuo and Courtney Swift, but play was stopped due to Air Force clinching the doubles point.
Singles play also featured some close matches. Rooke, facing off against Jones, posted a fantastic second set in a 2-6, 5-7 battle, while Gianan (6-7 [5-7], 0-6) had an incredible first set against Fumagalli. Lancaster (2-6, 5-7) fought well against opponent Sydney Fitch, with Rasmussen (0-6, 0-6) rounding out the field against Lieberman before Air Force clinched the team match.
Against Weber State, Rasmussen and junior Michelle Bader gave their best effort in a 4-6 final against opponents Yuuna Ukita and McKenna Lloyd. Grossman and Rooke also played a respectable match, finishing 3-6 against Megan Lombardi and Cali Fuller of the Wildcats. Finally, Gianan and Lancaster posted a score of 1-6 in their bout with Weber State's Caitlin Herb and Ana Morett-Salas.
Lancaster made a big comeback effort in the second set of her singles match, finishing 2-6, 4-6 against Morett-Salas. Meanwhile, Rasmussen posted a 3-6, 0-6 score against Herb, while Asciuto finished her match against Fuller at 2-6, 1-6. At the time that Weber State clinched the match point, Rooke was keeping up with opponent Lombardi in a thrilling 5-7, 3-4 nailbiter; Gianan was also playing well, as she was tied up at 2-2 with Ukita when play was stopped.
Next, the Redhawks return home for Senior Day at the Amy Yee Tennis Center, where they will face off against Bellevue College on March 8. Play is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
