HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Seattle University softball dropped a pair of one-run games on its first day at the Mahilihini Kipa Aloha Tournament, hosted by the University of Hawai'i. SU fell to Nevada, 3-2, and to Oregon State, 1-0 in eight innings, on Friday.
Carley Nance was stellar against the Beavers, throwing a complete game and only allowing an unearned run in the eighth, which started with OSU placing a runner at second base. Nance pitched 7.1 innings, giving up just three hits on the day.
SU's most serious threat came in the top of the fifth, when Cherise Silvan doubled and Mekenzie Madokoro singled to start the frame. The Redhawks were unable to push across the game's first run, though.
Madokoro went 2-3, while Silvan and Madison Cathcart each had a hit in the game.
In the first game of the day, Shi Smith pitched well, but Nevada came away with a walk-off victory. The Wolfpack scored first, putting up a run in the bottom of the third. Seattle U answered in the fifth, as Alyson Matriotti got a rally going with a one-out bunt single. Olivia Viggiano singled to left and then Ally Choate advanced the runners with a groundout. Cathcart then singled to left to drive in two runs and SU ahead.
Nevada came back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth. SU went down in order in the top of the seventh and the Wolfpack hit a home run to lead off their half of the inning, ending the contest.
Smith pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and striking out seven hitters. Viggiano led the offense with two hits.
The Redhawks will face Oregon State and Hawai'i tomorrow at the event.
