PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Seattle University softball went pitch-for-pitch with No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday, but the Sooners claimed a 2-1 decision at the 2020 Mary Nutter Classic. Shi Smith threw a complete game and allowed just two runs and five hits.

Olivia Viggiano got the game started for SU, doubling to right center to lead off the contest. Cherise Silvan bunted her over to third, and with two outs, Bailey Thompson smashed a double to the wall, driving in Viggiano for a 1-0 lead.

Smith, coming off her electric no-hit performance on Friday, allowed a hit in the bottom of the first, but earned a swinging strikeout to end the frame. Oklahoma hit a solo home run in the second and third inning to take a 2-1 edge. Smith settled back in and retired eight straight Sooners to get into the sixth inning.

In the seventh, the Redhawks looked to find a tying run. Mekenzie Madokoro walked, but SU couldn't move her ahead as the Sooners pulled out the contest.

Smith pitched six innings, giving up five hits and striking out five batters. Viggiano, Thompson, Madison Cathcart, and Lily Garcia notched hits for the Redhawks.

The Redhawks play twice tomorrow, facing No. 18 Missouri and Long Beach State at the Nutter Classic.
