BOISE, IDAHO – Seattle U women's tennis notched their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, facing Idaho State at the Boas Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho, and coming away with three singles and two doubles victories for a final score of 4-3, Redhawks.
Junior Hannah Gianan started off singles play with a decisive 6-0, 6-4 win over Hristina Cvetkovic of the Bengals. In the number two slot, classmate Kyra Jung ground out a win over Idaho State's Alexandra Arkhipov in three sets and a tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). Sophomore Alisa Sabotic clinched a win of her own against Megan Poe of ISU, also in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-2). Freshman Jade Lancaster attempted a valiant comeback from a rough start by taking Angela Walker to three sets, but ultimately lost, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6; meanwhile, sophomore Martina Asciuto took her own opponent to three sets after a strong beginning, losing to Madison Fenske 6-2, 5-7, 4-6. To round out the group, sophomore Jillian Rasmussen put up a tough fight against Melissa Coburn of the Bengals, yet finished 4-6, 1-6.
The doubles team of Asciuto and classmate Hannah Grossman rode their chemistry and grit to a 7-6 (7-5) win over the duo of Fenske and Coburn. Jung and Rasmussen faced off against Arkhipov and Walker, posting the exact same 7-6 (7-5) score to clinch the doubles point. Finally, Gianan and Lancaster finished 3-6 against Cvetkovic and Poe.
"The team played with high spirits and determination. Winning the doubles point was key," said Head Coach Joey Barnes. "Our singles matches were all battles to the end, and could have gone either way. It is nice to have a win, but we still have a lot to work on."
The Redhawks have a week until their next match, which will take place on Feb. 1 against South Dakota at the Tennis Center at Sand Point in Seattle. Play begins at 6:00 p.m. PT.
