EAGLE, IDAHO – Seattle U women's tennis gave Boise State a run for their money on Friday night, putting up perhaps their best team performance of the season against a tough Broncos team at the Eagle Tennis Club in Eagle, Idaho. Two Redhawks won their matches, but in the end, Boise State prevailed, 5-2.
Sophomore Martina Asciuto took care of Boise State's Jovana Kuljanin 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, to win a point for Seattle U in singles play. Freshman Jade Lancaster did the same against the Broncos' Ana Conde Vendrell in a three-set nailbiter, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). In the number one singles match, junior Hannah Gianan only just lost to Lilan Poling of BSU, 5-7, 6-3, 0-1 (4-10), while sophomore Alisa Sabotic (7-5, 0-6) started off strong in the number four slot but fell to Boise State's Vanessa Timm. Junior Kyra Jung (2-6, 1-6) fought hard in a loss to BSU's Joana Baptista, and sophomore Jillian Rasmussen finished 2-6, 0-6 against the Broncos' Holly Stewart.
In doubles play, Gianan and Rasmussen teamed up against Poling and Stewart, finishing 3-6 in a close-fought loss. The steady sophomore duo of Grossman and Asciuto gave it their all in a 2-6 final against Kuljanin and partner Camryn Moortgat, while Jung and Lancaster put up a 1-6 score against Timm and partner Mae McCutcheon.
"This was a very competitive match against a very strong team," said Head Coach Joey Barnes. "I feel that we are headed in the right direction."
Next, the Redhawks will head to Boise, Idaho, on Jan. 25 to play Idaho State on a neutral court. Play begins at 12:00 p.m. PT.
