UNIVERSITY PLACE, WASH. – As the spring season winds down, Seattle U men’s golf looks forward to the highlight of the year in their last tournament before Western Athletic Conference Championships – the Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay. The Seattle U-hosted event contains a sizeable field of 18 total programs from all across the country, and is located at one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier golf courses. The venue in particular, Chambers Bay, is a point of pride for Seattle U, as the course is famed for its status as the host of both the 2015 U.S. Open and the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship.

Although this will be the sixth year of the Redhawk Invitational’s existence, the 2019 tournament is particularly special to Seattle U. Chambers Bay recently underwent major renovations to replace the old greens with poa anna grass, and has been closed to the public since October 1. It reopens for general use on April 3, but the competitors in the Redhawk Invitational have the privilege of using it on April 1-2, making them the first golfers to test out the new surfaces.

“We are confident that the teams attending the tournament this year will be excited about the new putting surfaces, and that they will enjoy a championship-caliber experience,” said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. “The tournament field is composed of some great programs traveling to the Pacific Northwest, and we want to do everything in our power to make sure that they have a great time on the course.”

The program entries include Cal Baptist, Drexel, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Indiana, Little Rock, Northern Colorado, Oregon State, Rutgers, Seattle U, Seton Hall, UC Irvine, UCLA, UT Arlington, Utah, Washington and Winthrop.  Tee times start at 8:00 AM on both days of the competition.

In the Redhawks’ last outing, sophomore Gabe Spach tied for 16th place overall at the Oregon Duck Invitational, leading Seattle U to a fourth-place team finish.

“Our team is finally starting to settle into some quality routines,” said Chandonnet. “We always enjoy playing and hosting this event, and we’re hoping to put together a nice regular-season finish before the conference championships.”
