STANFORD, CALIF. – For the first time in school history, a Seattle U women’s tennis player made it past the second round in the Intercollegiate Tennis Federation Northwest Regional Championships, held this year from Oct. 18-22 at the Family Tennis Stadium at Stanford University. Freshman Jade Lancaster turned in a masterful performance for the Redhawks, reaching the round of 32 in the Singles Draw before falling to eventual quarterfinalist Haley Giavara of California, 0-6, 0-6.

“I am very proud of Jade – she is such a delightful and fun person to be around,” said Head Coach Joey Barnes. “It is very difficult for most freshmen to transition from the juniors into the role of a competitive D-I player. Jade has proven that she is more than willing to meet the challenge. If she continues to believe in her abilities and continue to put the time in to improve, I believe that she will continue to set records for Seattle U.”

Senior Peggy Rooke also won her first-round singles matchup, defeating Pacific’s Anna Ramos Vinolas in straight sets (6-4, 6-1), but was defeated in the round of 64 by Gonzaga’s Kate Ketels, 2-6, 4-6. Meanwhile, junior Hannah Gianan battled her way to three sets in her matchup against Caitlyn Frankel of Santa Clara (7[3]-6, 2-6, 4-6), and both sophomore Alisa Sabotic and junior Kyra Jung finished their matches strong – Sabotic faced Santa Clara’s Maddie Pothoff in a 1-6, 5-7 bout, while Jung’s match against Eastern Washington’s Louise Waite ended with a final score of 0-6, 5-7. Finally, sophomore Jillian Rasmussen played solidly against Elvena Gevargiz of Santa Clara in a 4-6, 2-6 effort, and classmate Aranza Alvarez-Sanabria faced Gabriela Tevez of St. Mary’s, finishing 1-6, 2-6.

In doubles, Gianan and Lancaster put up a tough fight against Lauren Ko and Sara Tsukamoto of UC Davis, eventually winning 5 games to the Aggies’ 8. Sophomores Martina Asciuto and Hannah Grossman teamed up against Santa Clara’s NadineDelCarmen and Caitlyn Frankel, finishing the match with a final of 3-8, while Rasmussen and Rooke took on Oregon’s Rifanty Kahfiani and Allison Mulville in a 2-8 battle. Junior Michelle Bader partnered with Jung; they lost their match, 2-8, to Zoe Eberle and Amaya Faith Lopez-Clay of Pacific. All four teams later won their consolation matches, with Asciuto and Grossman posting the largest margin of victory over their opponents, 8-4.

“This was an awesome weekend,” said Coach Barnes. “We had some great matches against a lot of great players. is a privilege to compete at this high level of competition – we are coming away from this experience with the knowledge of what it takes to be at your very best, to compete without fear and doubt, and a number of lessons about ourselves and what each of us needs to do to improve.

We have a bright future ahead of us.”
