NEWS AND NOTES
• Seattle U smashed NM State, 5-0, on Oct. 12 at Championship Field. Leahi Manthei scored twice, while Jessie Ray, Holly Rothering, and Kelsey Crosby each scored a goal.
• In the win over NMSU, freshman Madison Waguespack recorded her fifth shutout of the year, making four saves in the victory.
• After two weeks of WAC play, the Redhawks are unbeaten and sit in first place in the conference standings. They were voted preseason favorites in the coaches’ poll.
• Through four WAC games, SU is averaging 29 shots per match. That average is the highest among Division I schools in conference contests this season.
• On Oct. 6, Mo Nagel became the 13th different Redhawk to score a goal in 2019. SU is tied for third nationally with 13 different goal-scorers. Iowa has 16 scorers, while Louisiana Tech has 14. Seattle U, Utah State, and South Carolina have 13 each.
• Grand Canyon is coming off a 2-0 win over Kansas City on Oct. 10. Dani Babb and Camryn Larson scored, while Lauren Garthwaite made six saves in net for the shutout. Garthwaite earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her clean sheet.
• The Lopes are 2-1 in WAC action thus far, having beaten NM State and lost to UTRGV in 2019.
• Coach Julie Woodward won her 300th career game on Oct. 10, as the Redhawks beat CSU Bakersfield, 2-0, at Championship Field. She is the 28th active coach with 300 career victories.
• Leahi Manthei and Jessie Ray both scored in SU’s 2-0 win over CSUB. Ray added an assist in the match. SU outshot the `Runners, 26-4, in the contest.
Seattle U played to a 1-1 tie at Kansas City on Oct. 6. Mo Nagel scored her first career goal to put SU ahead late in the second half, but the Roos tied the match as the teams battled to a draw.
• The Redhawks began WAC play with a 4-1 win at Chicago State on Oct. 4. Holly Rothering scored two goals, while Gabe Jillings and Kelsey Crosby both scored in the road victory.
• In the win at Chicago State, SU set a Division 1 program record with 41 shots. That mark broke the previous record of 40 shots from last season’s game with the Cougars at Championship Field.
• Since 2013, Seattle U has won four WAC regular-season titles. It starts its run for a fifth crown this weekend.
• Seattle U led late at Cal Poly on Sept. 29, but the Mustangs scored to force overtime and then converted a penalty kick in the extra frame to claim the Redhawks’ non-conference finale.
• The Redhawks fell to Loyola Marymount, 1-0, on Sept. 26 at Championship Field. Madison Waguespack made four saves in net.
• Prior to the LMU match, the 2018 Seattle U WAC Championship team was honored, as the team received their title rings from last season.
• Seattle U dropped a 3-2 decision at Air Force on Sept. 20. Seniors Rachel Bowler and Holly Rothering scored in the match.
• SU claimed its first-ever win at Portland on Sept. 15, beating the Pilots, 3-2 in overtime. Kelsey Crosby scored her first collegiate goal in the first minute of OT to lift the Redhawks to their second overtime victory of the year.
• The Redhawks have now played four overtime games in 2019, going 2-1-1. They beat James Madison, tied Washington, and fell to No. 2 USC in extra time.
• Seattle U pushed third-ranked USC to overtime on Sept. 13, as Leahi Manthei scored to tie the game at two late in regulation. The Trojans scored to take the match in OT.
• Olivia Ovenell scored her first collegiate goal in her 50th career game at Seattle U. She finished a Rachel Bowler free kick with a header in the box to even the score at one with USC.
• The Redhawks hosted No. 3 USC, the highest-ranked Division I team to ever Championship Field and took the Trojans to OT.
• Jessie Ray earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the period ending Sept. 8 after scoring two goals at Idaho on Sept. 6. The senior claimed her third career WAC weekly award for her performance.
• SU dropped a 4-0 decision at Gonzaga on Sept. 8. Madison Waguespack made four saves in the contest.
• Seattle U won, 3-0, at Idaho on Sept. 6 at the Kibbie Dome. Jessie Ray scored two goals and Rakel Leosdottir recorded her first career goal in the victory.
• Madison Waguespack made four saves on her way to a shutout at Idaho. The freshman has three shutouts in four starts to begin her Redhawk career. She went 3-0-1 in her first four starts.
• Bailey Hall scored in the 78th minute as SU beat Portland State, 1-0, on Sept. 1 at Championship Field. Madison Waguespack made three saves in net for her second shutout of the year.
• Madison Waguespack was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending on Sept. 1. The freshman went 2-0-1 in her first three collegiate starts, tallying shutouts at Washington and against Portland State.
• On Aug. 29, Jessie Ray scored in the 97th minute to lift SU to a 3-2 overtime victory over James Madison. Bailey Hall and Lauren Brown both scored, while Madison Waguespack made five saves in net for her first career win.
• Jessie Ray’s OT goal marked the first score by a Redhawk in extra time since Brie Hooks scored to win at CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 9, 2016. It was SU’s first home overtime win since Aug. 23, 2015, when the Redhawks beat Oregon, 1-0.
• The Redhawks played a scoreless draw at Washington on Aug. 26, taking a point from UW for the first time in 15 all-time meetings. Freshman Madison Waguespack made three saves in her first career start, stopping a penalty kick early in the second half to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard.
• SU kicked off the 2019 season with a 4-0 setback against No. 15 Washington State on Aug. 22. Mackenzie Curry and Madison Waguespack combined for six saves in net for the Redhawks.
• Seattle U was picked to win the WAC in the preseason coaches’ poll, marking the sixth time in the last seven seasons that the Redhawks were voted preseason favorites. Seniors Rachel Bowler and Jessie Ray were chosen All-WAC Preseason.
• Coach Julie Woodward enters her 23rd season at SU. She has won 294 games at SU.
• The Redhawks won the 2018 WAC Tournament Championship, advancing to their fourth NCAA Tournament since 2013. SU is the lone Division I program to play in each of its last six conference championship matches.
• SU features seven seniors, four juniors, 11 sophomores, and 16 freshmen on this year’s roster.
• Seattle U will serve as host for the 2019 WAC Tournament Nov. 6-10 at Championship Field. The last time SU hosted, in 2014, the Redhawks won to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
