CHICAGO – Sergio Rivas of Seattle University men’s soccer was selected by San Jose Earthquakes with the 26th pick in the 2019 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft Friday. Rivas is the fifth Redhawk to be taken in the MLS Draft.

"I'm really excited for him," said Coach Pete Fewing. "San Jose wanted him and they were pleased to get him today. He had a terrific combine and I think he can play at the next level. I'm really proud of him. It's exciting for our program."

Rivas, a midfielder from Albuquerque, New Mexico, put up four goals and 11 assists in 2018. He earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region First Team, All-WAC First Team, and WAC All-Tournament Team honors. He finished his collegiate career with 27 assists, second-most in WAC history.

Five SU products have been MLS Draft picks. Alex Roldan (2018), Kyle Bjornethun (2017) and Sean Morris (2011) were Sounders’ selections, while Tom Hardy (1998) was taken by Kansas City.
