SEATTLE - Seattle U men’s golf opens its season on Monday, Sept. 17 for the Ram Masters Invitational, hosted by Colorado State University. An impressive 18 teams will compete in the two-day, 54-hole tournament, with Seattle U as the lone representative of the Western Athletic Conference. This is the Redhawks’ first-ever entry in the competition, which is played in Fort Collins, Colo., at the Fort Collins Country Club. They will go up against golfers from Colorado, Colorado State, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, Idaho, Illinois State, Long Beach State, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Omaha, Rice, Sam Houston State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Washington State, Wichita State, and Wyoming.
“I’m feeling fortunate to be competing at Colorado State in an elite event to start our year,” said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. “I’m hoping the guys can just go out there and grind. We need to be committed, confident and playing for each other.”
The Redhawks have six returners on the team: juniors Greg Gionfriddo and Zack Overstreet, redshirt sophomore Thomas Almojuela, and sophomores Quinton Borseth, Ben Gruher, and Gabe Spach. They debut two freshmen for the 2018-19 season in Nathan Cogswell and Jack Rahon, who both competed in the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
“I’m very excited about the group of young men we’ve assembled at Seattle U,” Chandonnet remarked. “We have a very young team that will be provided with the opportunity to grow together over the next couple of years, and there is hope that we can accomplish great things together. Our goal this season is to simply create a culture centered around mindfulness. We need to be disciplined and accountable in the moment, and we need to appreciate and enjoy that moment - that opportunity.
“The goal of this process for our group will be that we are able to create some sort of peace in our lives, to deal with our fears and stresses while detaching ourselves from the outcome. I’m confident that these attributes will lead us down the path to be competitive, and that winning is a byproduct of improving our habits.”
Redhawk fans will see the first test of that process on Monday.
