HISTORIC START
Seattle U has opened the season with a 11-3 record through 14 games, marking the best start to a season in more than 50 years. The last time that Seattle U started 11-3 was in 1967-68 when they went 11-2 through 13 games, then dropped two straight to sit at 11-4 through 15 contests. The last time Seattle U had a better start than 11-3 was 1963-64. They went 13-2 through 15 games before picking up their third loss.
ABOUT THE SERIES VS CALIFORNIA
In nine all-time meetings between Seattle U and Cal, the Bears hold a 7-2 advantage. In the Redhawks’ modern-day Division I era, the teams have two meetings, with the Bears winning each affair. Cal earned a 66-52 win on Dec. 1, 2015 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The Bears also claimed an 81-59 win on Dec. 19, 2017 at KeyArena. Seattle U won the first-ever meeting between the two programs - a historic 66-62 overtime victory in the West Regional of the 1957-58 NCAA Tournament. The two schools would meet six more times during the 60s, 70s and 80s. Seattle U also won an 81-67 decision during the 1978-79 season.
LAST TIME OUT
Seattle U closed out its 2018 home slate in style, earning an impressive 102-64 victory over Prairie View A&M University in front of a packed house at the Redhawk Center on Dec. 20. The win marked SU’s 11th of the season as they improved to 10-1 at home. Three Redhawks finished in double figures with Myles Carter and Matej Kavas contributing 22 points each along with 18 from Morgan Means. All 14 players saw court time, with four freshmen playing alongside each other in much of the second half. Rip Economou drained three triples in the second half for his best outing of the season.
DEJA VU 10TH WIN
The Redhawks improved to 10-3 to start the season for the first time in exactly 50 years with a 67-56 win at University of Portland on Dec. 17 at the Chiles Center in Portland. The Redhawks achieved the feat in déjà vu fashion to their 1968-69 counterparts, as the former Seattle U squad also beat Portland (6-7) for their 10th win of the season. That Seattle U team would improve to 10-3 in their 13th game of the season – a 79-54 win at Portland.
EYING 400
Seattle U Head Coach Jim Hayford entered the 2018-19 season with 380 career victories over the course of his 19-year career. His 20th season as a head coach is off to a strong start as the Redhawks sit at 11-3 through 14 games, bringing his career wins total to 391. Hayford now needs just nine more wins to hit the 400 mark for his career, as well as notch his second consecutive 20-win season at Seattle U. Hayford has 12 20+ win seasons during his career.
TOP THREE FROM THREE
