SEATTLE – Seattle U freshman Nathan Cogswell has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month for October, the WAC announced on Thursday. Cogswell ranks third overall in the conference with a 72.17 stroke average. He has either led the Redhawks outright or tied for the top roster finish in each of Seattle U’s four fall tournaments.
Cogswell’s best performance came at the Nick Watney Invitational, shooting a six-under-par 66 in the final round to take fourth place in the tournament at 10-under 206. In the Little Rock Invitational, his most recent competition, he tied for 24th place with a score of five-over 221.
Head Coach Marc Chandonnet is thrilled about Nathan’s achievements. “Nathan has had an immediate impact as a Redhawk - his successes speak for themselves,” he said. “However, something that the outside world doesn’t see from the statistics is the impact that he has already had on the team’s overall character. Nathan is mentally strong and unwavering in how he shows up to compete - he focuses his attention in the right places and works hard.
“We - his teammates and coaching staff - are extremely proud of his accomplishment, and appreciate how Nathan shows up and contributes daily to our program. As we’ve gotten to know him, it has become clear that he is motivated mainly by his contributions to the team, rather than by his individual finishes. It is an encouraging mentality for us to think about and adopt.”
Cogswell and the Redhawks will show fans and competitors how they have built on this mindset at the UC Irvine Invitational, hosted in Newport Beach, Calif., from Feb. 11-12.
