NEWS AND NOTES

  • Saturday’s game is the regular-season finale, as the Redhawks and Wolverines battle for positioning in the WAC Tournament.
  • With a win at Utah Valley, SU will secure the second seed and a first-round bye in the WAC Tournament. It can also clinch the two seed with a tie if UTRGV ties New Mexico State or with a loss if UTRGV loses to NM State. The Redhawks will be either the two seed or three seed in the conference tournament.
  • On Oct. 21, SU handed Kansas City its first WAC regular-season loss in two years, beating the Roos, 3-1, at Championship Field. Bailey Hall, Holly Rothering, and Leahi Manthei each scored and Ariana Romero made six saves in net. UMKC had yet to allow a goal in WAC play this season.
  • Leahi Manthei was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week after putting up a goal and an assist in the win over Kansas City on Oct. 21. It’s her second career WAC weekly award.
  • Prior to the win over the Roos, the Redhawks honored their senior class. Ashley Routh, Hannah Carrothers, Isabelle Butterfield, Emily Bringgold, Olivia Ovenell, and Emily Zimmer were recognized at Championship Field.
  • Utah Valley is 3-3-1 in WAC action entering Saturday. It is 0-2-1 in its last three outings, including a scoreless draw at Grand Canyon last weekend.
  • UVU has secured a postseason spot and currently stands as the fifth seed in the WAC Tournament, but needs to remain ahead of CSU Bakersfield to maintain fifth. The Wolverines have 10 points to the `Runners’ nine.
  • The Wolverines are the defending WAC Tournament champions and will host next week’s WAC Tournament.
  • Sadie Brockbank paces UVU with seven goals and three assists this season.
  • SU tied, 0-0 in double overtime, at UTRGV on Oct. 14. Ariana Romero made a career-high 10 saves as the Redhawks extended their unbeaten streak to four games.
  • Ariana Romero earned her second WAC Defensive Player of the Week award of the year after tallying two road shutouts the weekend of Oct. 12-14. The freshman has allowed just three goals in six conference outings.
  • The Redhawks rolled to a 4-0 win at New Mexico State on Oct. 12. Kelsey Vogel scored the first two goals of her career, while Jessie Ray and Rachel Bowler each scored. Ariana Romero made two saves for the shutout in net.
  • SU took down Chicago State, 3-1, on Oct. 7. Isabelle Butterfield, Bailey Hall, and Kelsey Eagle scored as the Redhawks improved to 3-1-0 in WAC play.
  • In the win over Chicago State, Seattle U set a Division I-program record with 40 shots.
  • Seattle U won, 4-3, at CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 5. Rachel Bowler scored the first two goals of her SU career to lift the Redhawks to victory. Jessie Ray dished out a career-high three assists, while Isabelle Butterfield and Holly Rothering both posted their first goal of the season.
  • SU matched a season high with four goals in the win at CSUB. It also scored four goals against California Baptist on Sept. 28.
  • SU dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Grand Canyon on Sept. 30. Ariana Romero tallied a career-high seven saves in net.
  • The Redhawks opened their WAC slate with a resounding 4-0 win over California Baptist on Sept. 28. Jessie Ray scored two goals, while Emily Zimmer and Laura Hooper each scored once.
  • The Redhawks recorded a season-high 26 shots in the win over CBU.
  • Jessie Ray scored twice in her first start since Sept. 2. The junior leads the team with six goals in six outings this year.
  • SU dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime at Portland on Sept. 23. Ariana Romero made five saves in the non-conference finale.
  • Seattle U fell, 1-0, to Gonzaga on Sept. 21 at Championship Field. Ariana Romero made four saves in goal, but the Zags scored in the closing minutes to escape with a victory.
  • The Redhawks played in front of a Championship Field-record 909 fans in their game with Washington on Sept. 16.
  • SU suffered a 3-2 overtime setback against Idaho on Sept. 13. Laura Hooper and Paige Malm scored as the Redhawks led 1-0 and 2-1, but the Vandals pulled out the decision in OT at rainy Championship Field.
  • SU tied Cal Poly, 1-1 in double overtime, on Sept. 9. Leahi Manthei scored early in the second half, but the Mustangs tied the game in the final minutes of regulation and neither team could score in overtime.
  • The Redhawks dropped a 2-1 decision to UC Riverside on Sept. 7. Emily Zimmer scored her second goal in two games in the match.
  • Freshman Ariana Romero made a career-high six saves in goal, playing the full 90 minutes for the first time as a Redhawk.
  • SU tied Cal State Fullerton, 1-1, on Aug. 26. Jessie Ray scored her fourth goal of the season in the draw at Championship Field.
  • SU beat Portland State, 3-0, on Sept. 2 as Emily Zimmer, Leahi Manthei, and Laura Hooper each scored for the Redhawks. Zimmer’s goal was the first of her career (61 games).
  • Ariana Romero made her first career start in goal, playing 75 minutes and extending her season-long scoreless streak to 152:33. Mackenzie Curry closed the game, making a save to split the shutout.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Ariana Romero was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week, for the period ending Aug. 26. Romero did not allow a goal in 77 minutes of action over two games, making one save and sharing a shutout with Mackenzie Curry.
  • SU beat two-time defending Big Sky Tournament champion Eastern Washington, 3-0, on Aug. 20. Jessie Ray scored two goals and assisted on another as the Redhawks opened their eight-game homestand with a victory.
  • Emily Bringgold scored for SU in the win over Eastern Washington, notching her first career goal as a Redhawk.
  • Seattle U began the regular season with a 3-1 setback at No. 21 Washington State on Aug. 17.
  • Jessie Ray finished a header off a Laura Hooper assist in the 13th minute to account for the Redhawks’ goal at WSU.
  • The Redhawks were voted to take third in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Defenders Rachel Bowler and Hannah Carrothers were named to the Preseason All-WAC Team. Carrothers and forward Jessie Ray were 2017 All-WAC Second Team selections.
  • Julie Woodward enters her 22nd season as Seattle U head coach. She has guided the Redhawks to four WAC regular season titles, three WAC Tournament crowns, and eight straight winning seasons.
  • Last season, SU won nine games and advanced to the WAC Championship game for the fifth straight year. It will have to replace nine seniors who graduated. The Redhawks have a 12-player freshman class in 2018.
