SEATTLE – As October draws to a close, Seattle U cross country looks forward to hosting its biggest event of the season – the Western Athletic Conference Championships. The event will be hosted at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle, with the women’s 6k race starting at 10:00 a.m. PST and the men’s 8k at 11:00 a.m. The awards ceremony will follow at 12:15 p.m.
Both races will be streamed on the WAC’s Facebook page. The New Mexico State women look to defend their 2017 conference title, while the Kansas City men hope to three-peat as champions.
This season saw tremendous improvement for the Redhawks on both the men’s and women’s side, with sixteen total runners setting personal records in their respective races. Of these 16, 14 of those records came at the team’s most recent competition, the Bronco Invitational. Two Seattle U runners – sophomore Nathan Pixler and senior Eli Boudouris – were recognized by the conference during the season for their success. Pixler won the Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week award for Sept. 3-9, and Boudouris received the same honor for the week of Oct. 8-14.
The Redhawks will enter 11 athletes on each side in the competition, with nine final runners racing in the men’s and women’s races.

Head Coach Kelly Sullivan expressed his excitement for Saturday’s event. “We are very excited to be hosting the 2018 WAC Cross Country Championships on one of the best collegiate courses in the country,” he said. “The Jefferson Park course is a 2000-meter loop that is tremendously spectator-friendly and creates a fantastic championship feel.
“As a staff and program we are very thankful to the Seattle University athletic administration, as they are putting in countless hours to prepare for the championships and are allowing our staff to be very flexible and able to continue to coach both teams.”
Sullivan has high expectations for his runners, and puts a great deal of trust in them. “Both our men’s and women’s teams have worked extremely hard to be prepared," he said. "We are all very confident in the nine who will toe the starting line in both races. The WAC is excellent in cross country, so the competition on both sides has a lot of talented teams and individuals.” As a coach, he believes that both the men’s and women’s teams are ready to match that talent. "Although we have not always had the finishes that we know we are capable of, the preparation for the championship is all that matters now. We try not to focus on prior results or projections."
In preparation for the championship race, Seattle U cross country and track and field will be hosting an alumni reception at O’Brien Center at 5:30 PM on Friday, Oct. 26. Friends and family of the programs are welcome to attend, and they will have a chance to hear from the coaches and meet this year’s rosters.
