SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball opened its 2018-19 preseason training with a team boot camp competition as the second year under Head Coach Jim Hayford has officially gotten underway.
Bolstering a roster featuring four returning letterwinners, three redshirt transfers who spent 2017-18 as arguably the nation's best scout team and nine new faces, the Redhawks spent their first days together competing as individual and small groups in a variety of strength and conditioning exercises.
"Boot camp is a mental challenge more than a physical challenge," said junior guard Morgan Means. "It's made up of physical activities that test your conditioning, but it's mental in a sense of how hard you are willing to push. All of the events are doable, but will you push yourself to the limit and get the job done or will you allow yourself to quit."
"In a team building sense, you know what you have to do, but you also have to encourage everyone else and pick them up," Means said.
The guard from Compton, Calif., is among the Redhawks' four returning letterwinners and one of six juniors on a squad without a senior. Also returning from last season's 20-win team is redshirt junior Matej Kavas who led Seattle U with 15.2 ppg and was among the nation's best in three-point shooting percentage. Junior Mattia Da Campo and sophomore Aaron Nettles round out the active returners.
Ready to enter the mix this winter is are a trio of transfers who utilized a redshirt season in 2017-18 due to NCAA transfer rules. Six-foot-nine, redshirt junior Myles Carter (Seton Hall) will be a force to reckon with inside while redshirt junior Delante Jones (American) and redshirt sophomore Dashawn McDowell (SMU) will be key on the perimeter.
The Redhawks' nine new faces include seven freshmen and two junior college transfers.
