HUTCHINSON, Kan. – (April 23) The Western Athletic Conference men’s golf championship is underway at the Prairie Dunes Country Club where Seattle University finished in sixth place on Monday after the first of three rounds.

The par 70, 6,940-yard course was home to the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2006 U.S. Senior Open, and the 2014 NCAA Division I men’s championship. Now, it hosts the seven WAC schools competing for a conference championship.

The Redhawks shot a 12-over 292 which puts them in sixth place ahead of Chicago State. Utah Valley leads the way at three-over, and UMKC and UTRGV are right behind at four-over.

SU’s top finishers in round one were Gabe Spach and Joe Harvie who shot a two-over-par 72 and are tied for twelfth overall, five strokes behind the leader. Spach finished round one on a tear, by birdying the last three holes, and Harvie hit two birdies in the last five holes. Greg Gionfriddo is right behind them at three-over 73 and tied for 16th. Thomas Almojuela shot a five-over-par 75, and Zack Overstreet rounds out the Redhawks at six-over-par 76.

The Redhawks were picked to finish 6th by the league’s head coaches prior to the tournament, but after only one round, nothing has been decided. Round two will start tomorrow at 8 a.m. and you can follow the live scores HERE.
