SEATTLE – (Mar. 28) Seattle University baseball continues Western Athletic Conference play on the road this week, traveling to face Chicago State at Cougar Stadium for a three-game series in advance of the Easter holiday. The Redhawks (13-9, 1-2 WAC) and Cougars (5-16, 0-3 WAC) begin the series Thursday with a 3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT first pitch. The series continues Saturday at 3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT and concludes Sunday at 12 p.m. CT/10 a.m. PT.

NEWS AND NOTES

  • Seattle U went 1-2 at New Mexico State to open WAC play last week. The Aggies won game one, 12-6, and game three, 12-2, whiel the Redhawks claimed a 5-4 victory in the second game. 
  • Nick Meservey will appear for the first time this season as Saturday's projected starter. The redshirt junior lefty made three starts early in 2017 before being sidelined with an arm injury.
  • Dalton Hurd hit his fourth home run of the season on Mar. 24 at New Mexico State, giving him 16 for his career, which makes him the Redhawks' career leader. He passes Josh Kalalau, who hit 15 home runs from 2010-11.
  • The Redhawks are batting a collective .291, led by freshman Justin Mazzone's .462 average (12-for-26). Fellow freshman Jake Cosgrove si batting .361 while ranking second on the team in hits with 26. The rookie also has eight extra-base hits including five doubles, two triples and one home run.
  • Austin Lively and Dalton Hurd are hitting .354 and .337, respectively, while each holding a team-high 29 hits.
  • The Redhawks have 54 total extra-base hits on the year, including 37 doubles, six triples and 11 home runs. Dalton Hurd has four of those homers while Lucas Denney has two and five others have one each.
  • Jake Prizina leads the pitching staff with a 3.50 ERA and 2-0 record in six starts. The junior lefty has a team-high 34 strikeouts to go along with just six walks issued in 36 total innings.
  • Zach Wolf was named WAC Pitcher of the Week on March 19. He picked up a trio of saves as the Redhawks went 3-0 against Pacific Northwest opponents. He now has six saves on the season, good enough for second in the WAC statistical standings. He is also 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA in 13 appearances this season.
  • The Redhawks were selected fourth in the WAC preseason poll, as voted on by the league's nine head coaches. New Mexico State was selected to finish second, and earned a pair of first-place votes.
