LAS VEGAS – (Feb. 18) Seattle University softball dropped a 7-5 decision at UNLV Sunday afternoon. Madison Cathcart and Savannah Loomis both homered on the final day of the Marucci Desert Classic.

”Overall, it was a good weekend,” said Coach Geoff Hirai. “We had a letdown today, but we’ll keep working and get better for next weekend.”

The Redhawks (6-4) started quickly Sunday, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Ally Choate hit an infield single and then, with two outs, Cathcart hit an opposite-field homer to left. Loomis followed with a solo shot over the left-field fence for a 3-0 lead.

UNLV (8-2) responded with its own three-run inning in its half of the first, tying the contest. The Rebels then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second.

In the fourth, Breanna Timmons doubled to lead off. With two outs, Nicole Bolasky singled to bring in Timmons, making it 6-4.

After the hosts added a run, SU needed three scores to tie it in the top of the seventh. Cherise Silvan singled to start a rally and moved to third base with two outs. Kaylee Ree’s bunt single plated Silvan to make it 7-5. Cathcart then hit a single to left, putting two on base. The Redhawks were unable to find a tying hit, though, as UNLV claimed the victory.

The Redhawks head to Stockton, Calif., for the Libby Matson Tournament next weekend. They will play five games in three days.
