BOX SCORE

SAN ANTONIO – (Oct. 8) No. 18 Seattle University men’s soccer won, 2-0, at Incarnate Word Sunday. Gabriel Ruiz and Alex Roldan both scored in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at hot Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

“Today was a complete team effort,” said Coach Pete Fewing. “We played in tough conditions and came away with a win. Both goals were terrific.”

Once again, SU (9-2-1, 3-0-1 WAC) settled into its possession style, dictating the game to the Cardinals (3-7-1, 1-3-0 WAC) in the first half. The Redhawks put up six shots to just two for the home side in the first 45 minutes. At the 39:25 mark, nifty passing in the open field led to a score. Orlando Neto made a move and found Roldan, who one-touched a ball to Ruiz. The freshman dribbled into space and unloaded a shot into the upper right corner from 20 yards out for his first collegiate goal.

The hosts hung tough in the second half, putting a pair of shots on net, but Josh Adachi was on the spot each time. SU earned several opportunities, but was unable to convert until the closing minutes. After a Cardinal foul, Roldan connected on a superb free kick from 30 yards out, beating the UIW goalkeeper on the right side.

Adachi recorded his seventh shutout of the season. SU outshot its foe, 13-8, and held a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Seattle U will host a three-game home stand beginning on Thursday, Oct. 12, as Air Force visits Championship Field in a WAC showdown.
