COMPLETE TOURNAMENT FIELD
SEATTLE – (May 4) Seattle University men's golf will be making its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament since 1965, earning the 12th seed in the Sammamish, Wash., regional, announced by the NCAA Thursday. The regional will be contested at the Aldarra Golf Course.
"I'm really excited for the guys," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "They've put in many years of hard work and this will be a great opportunity for them to display their talent, especially since we have seven players born and raised in the state of Washington. So what a great opportunity to play in front of their home crowd and family."
The Redhawks earned the Western Athletic Conference's automatic berth into the 2017 NCAA field by virtue of claiming the team title last week in Mesa, Ariz. SU held off a charging UMKC on the final day to win by four strokes. Senior Kyle Cornett finished second overall and freshman Zack Overstreet was third, shooting a five-under-par 66 in the final round.
"From the beginning of the season we had the goal to make to NCAAs and so to be able to bear that fruit and accomplish that goal is really exciting," said Overstreet. "(Aldarra Golf Course) is about 20 minutes from my house so I grew up working there. I've played it several times and I know the course, which is a bit of an advantage. But we will approach it like every other tournament – go into it with a competitive edge and play our best."
Seattle U has five all-time appearances in the NCAA Tournament field – 1955, 1959, 1960, 1964 and 1965. Their best finish was sixth place to conclude the 1960 season.
Eighty-one teams and 45 individuals were selected to compete in the six NCAA Men's Regional Championship sites, May 15-17 (13 teams and 10 individuals at three regionals and 14 teams and five individuals at three regionals). 30 teams and six individuals will advance from regional sites to the national championships to be played May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
