DAY TWO RESULTS | WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS CENTRAL
HOUSTON (Feb. 23) – The Seattle University men’s swimming team continued to impress at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships Thursday. The Redhawks tallied a number of all-time top-ten efforts in the meet, hosted at the University of Houston.
“I saw a lot of fire from this team,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “We have a big day tomorrow, but I’m really happy with where things are right now. We’re lighting it up here.”
In the 500 freestyle, Austin Barnard recorded a 4:32.38, logging the third-fastest time in program history and taking 14th place Thursday. He improved on his previous best time by over five seconds. Zach Zenteno put up a 4:37.38 in the race, easily topping his previous personal-best time in an 18th place finish. Luke Christensen took 19th with a personal-best time of 4:42.31 Thursday.
Grant Gooding notched a 1:51.13 in the 200 IM, posting the fifth-best time in school history. He also finished 15th in the final.
Ben Nussbaum contributed a 1:53.32 in the 200 IM, setting a new career-low time. Jason Klein finished just behind Nussbaum, recording his best time as a Redhawk at 1:53.37.
Tanner Schelling placed 18th in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 20.49 seconds. Michael Cox swam a personal-best time of 21.37 in the same event.
In the 200 free relay, Schelling’s leadoff leg was a career best as Seattle U took seventh with a time of 1:22.86. Schelling’s time also stands as the second-best in school history.
Tomorrow’s action will feature the finals in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 400 medley relay events.
