HOUSTON (Feb. 22) – Seattle University men’s swimming opened competition at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships Wednesday night. The 200 medley relay team broke a school record in the meet hosted at the University of Houston.

"We had some things going tonight," said Coach Craig Nisgor. "We just had a few little things that cost us. We know we're going to bounce back. Breaking a couple school records on the first night is pretty good."

Morgan Montemayor, Tanner Schelling, Jack Baldoni, and Greg Raper combined to swim a 1:29.27 in the 200 medley, breaking a program record and tallying a fifth-place finish. SU's previous top mark was set at last year's WAC Championships, as Montemayor, Schelling, Baldoni, and M Morris logged a 1:29.78 effort. Air Force won Wednesday's race with a time of 1:26.67.

In the 800 freestyle relay, the Redhawks took sixth place. The team of Montemayor, Mitchell Crossen, Jason Klein, and Austin Barnard teamed up for a 6:52.88 performance Wednesday. Grand Canyon touched first with a 6:24.51 showing.

In time trial action, several Redhawks notched new personal bests. In the 50 freestyle, Ian Keane swam a 21.26 and Ben Nussbaum put up a 21.67 time. Connor Webb touched in 51.73 in the 100 butterfly and Luke Christensen posted a 48.77 in the 100 free.

After one day of action, SU stands sixth in the seven-team field. On Thursday, there will be four men’s swimming finals. The 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle races will be held tomorrow night.
