SEATTLE (Feb. 16) – The Seattle University men’s swimming team will compete at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships next week. The meet runs from Feb. 22-25 at the University of Houston.
"The WAC is a very strong league," said Coach Craig Nisgor. "To have five of the men ranked in the top 10 of at least one event sets us up for some great results. They have been training hard, getting in the right mind set and realizing what they have already done this season they know they are ready. It should be a great meet and we are looking forward to getting to Houston."
Tanner Schelling, a senior, is seeded in the top five in two events next week. In the 100 breaststroke, his time of 53.85 is good for the second seed, a school record, and an NCAA ‘B’ cut. His time is just .01 behind Wyoming’s Gabriel Rooker for fastest in the league.
Schelling’s 2:00.62 showing in the 200 breaststroke ranks fifth in the WAC. It’s also the second-fastest time in the event in SU history.
In the 100 butterfly, Jack Baldoni’s time of 48.58 stands fifth entering next week.
Alec Barnard’s 1:50.62 in the 200 butterfly is sixth-best in the conference.
Morgan Montemayor and Jason Klein both picked up top ten seeds in the 100 backstroke. Montemayor’s time of 49.76 is eighth-fastest in the WAC, while Klein is just behind at 49.84. The times are the top two in program history.
