SEATTLE (Jan. 7) – The Seattle University men’s swimming team defeated Whitworth, 193-67, Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks won all 14 events on senior day at the Connolly Complex.

“Overall, it was pretty good today,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “We’re tired, but we’re really pushing ourselves. I think that’s going to set us up well for when we get rested.”

Tanner Schelling, one of four SU seniors, won the 100 breaststroke with a 56.47 time. Alec Barnard, another senior, was the winner in the 200 butterfly. His time of 1:52.74 matched his team-best mark for the season.

Jack Baldoni won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly Saturday. He outreached Mitchell Crossen in the 50 free, recording a 21.59 to win by .16 seconds. Baldoni then finished in 49.45 to win the 100 fly. Crossen took first in the 100 free, beating out Morgan Montemayor and Greg Raper.

In the 200 freestyle, Jason Klein topped a 1-2-3 finish for the Redhawks. Raper and Jacob Morris followed in second and third, respectively. Klein was also the winner in the 200 backstroke, swimming a 1:56.61. Montemayor touched first in the 100 backstroke, swimming a 51.04.

Austin Barnard swept the 500 and 1000 freestyle races. In the 500 freestyle, he logged a 4:47.40 to finish ahead of Luke Christensen and Zach Zenteno. Austin Barnard won the 1000 freestyle by over 14 seconds, recording a 9:50.14 time, a season-best by a Redhawk.

Ben Nussbaum topped the field in the 200 breaststroke, as Connor Webb, a senior, placed second. Grant Gooding touched first in the 200 IM, narrowly defeating Schelling. Gooding tallied a time of 1:57.06, just ahead of Schelling’s 1:57.09 finish.

The 400 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay were also both victorious Saturday.

The four-man senior class of Schelling, Webb, Alec Barnard, and Michael Cox was recognized prior to the meet.

SU travels to Air Force next weekend. It will face the Falcons on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14, in Colorado Springs.
