SEATTLE (Jan. 21) – The Seattle University men’s swimming team rolled past Simon Fraser, 138-65, on Saturday at the Connolly Complex. Tanner Schelling won twice as SU wrapped up its home schedule for the season.
“We came together as a team,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “We got a lot of good stuff done today. We got done what we needed to get done.”
In the 100 breaststroke, Schelling touched first with a 55.41 time, setting a pool record. Connor Webb was the runner-up in the race.
Schelling also notched a 20.80 in the 50 free, touching first ahead of Greg Raper and Jack Baldoni. Schelling’s time is a season-best.
In the 100 butterfly, Seattle U had the top three finishers. Jack Baldoni won with a 49.55 showing. Alec Barnard and Shawn Fujii finished second and third, respectively.
Morgan Montemayor put up a 50.29 time in the 100 backstroke, finishing ahead of fellow Redhawk Jason Klein, who took second.
Austin Barnard placed first in the 500 freestyle. He rallied to defeat SFU’s Mackenzie Hamill, passing him on the final leg for a winning time of 4:41.22. The mark is a season-best time.
Grant Gooding won the 400 IM, logging a season-best 4:05.56 for first place. Mitchell Crossen had two runner-up finishes on the day, taking second in the 100 free and the 200 free.
In the 200 medley relay, Montemayor, Schelling, Baldoni, and Raper teamed up to post a 1:32.47, winning the event. Montemayor combined with Crossen, Jacob Morris, and Klein to win the 400 freestyle relay. The group notched a 3:08.29 to claim the victory.
“We were strong across the board,” said Nisgor. “Morgan had some really good swims. Austin looked really good today. Overall, I thought we did really well.”
Four SU seniors swam in their final meet at the Connolly Complex Saturday.
“The seniors made the program what it is,” said Nisgor. “It’s been phenomenal. They demonstrate to the underclassmen what it means to be a member off this team, in and out of the pool.”
The Redhawks will compete at Simon Fraser on Saturday, Jan. 28. The regular season finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
