SEATTLE (Jan. 6) - Seattle University men’s swimming took down Pomona-Pitzer, 162-84, Friday evening. Austin Barnard won the 500 and 1000 freestyle races in the event at the Connolly Complex.
“We’re tired and we’re still swimming fast,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “We have the right mentality going into these races.”
Barnard tallied a 9:49.38 in the 1000 free, touching first. The time is the best by a Redhawk in the event this season. In the 500 free, he trailed for much of the race before notching a 26.93 to close out the contest with a winning time of 4:47.84.
Mitchell Crossen won the 100 and 200 freestyle competitions. He and Morgan Montemayor went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle Friday. Crossen logged a 1:43.90, beating out Montemayor’s 1:44.38 for the win. Montemayor’s time was a personal best. In the 100 free, Crossen posted a 47.57 time.
Tanner Schelling won the 50 freestyle with a 20.87 time, topping his own season-best time. Greg Raper touched second in the contest. Schelling also took first in the 200 breaststroke. The senior logged a time of 2:07.54 in the event.
“Tanner was pretty solid,” said Nisgor. “We had some really great times tonight.”
Montemayor was the winner in the 200 backstroke, edging out Jason Klein. Montemayor swam a 1:54.28 to touch first.
Klein and Zach Zenteno led the field in the 100 backstroke, as Klein recorded a 50.92 on his way to victory. Jack Baldoni and Shawn Fujii were the first two finishers in the 200 butterfly. Baldoni put up a time of 1:53.23 to easily win the race. Alec Barnard finished first in the 100 butterfly with a 51.10 swim. In the 200 IM, Ben Nussbaum touched the wall first, tallying a 1:58.40 time. The 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams were both victorious as well.
The Redhawks host Whitworth tomorrow at 2 p.m. Twelve SU seniors will be recognized prior to the meet.
