INDIANAPOLIS - (Dec. 5) Seattle University men’s basketball senior Emmanuel Chibuogwu was one of eight Western Athletic Conference student-athletes to be named a 2017 Allstate NABC Good Works Team® nominee, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and Allstate Insurance Company recently announced.

The award honors an outstanding group of student-athletes who represent the sport’s finest in the areas of community service and leadership among their peers.

The Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® recognizes players at all levels of college basketball whose charitable involvement and altruistic acts stand out amongst all other student-athletes participating in the sport. From leading an initiative to help end the water crisis in Flint, Mich., to co-founding a non-profit with the mission to improve literacy rates across the country, the players nominated embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.

“The positive impact that student-athletes are making on college campuses and communities around the world can sometimes go unnoticed,” said Thomas Clarkson, president of the west territory for Allstate Insurance Company and a member of the 2017 NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® selection panels. “Allstate is a proud supporter of NCAA® college basketball and takes immense pride in working with the NABC and WBCA to recognize players who continue to make giving back a priority and inspire future generations of athletes.”

A Seattle native, Chibuogwu is in his fifth and final season as a member of the Seattle University men’s basketball team. A redshirt in 2012-13, Chibuogwu has since totaled 273 points and 185 rebounds in 77 career games. He has been a part of two postseason appearances in the CBI and was on the 2014-2015 team that reached the WAC Championship game. Last season, Chibuogwu hit a game winning shot off of an offensive rebound at Grand Canyon University, which, at the time, hadn’t lost at home.

Off the court, Chibuogwu has been involved in a variety of service and volunteer activities during his entire career as a Redhawk. His involvement has included: Volunteer speaker at Heathy Redhawks grade-school program (2016), featured student speaker at the Courtside Luncheon (2016), volunteer at the Seattle University Athletics Red Tie Celebration (2015-16), volunteer at the Yesler Terrace Community Center Halloween Party (2014-15), volunteer youth coach (5th and 6th grade) basketball league (2014-15), volunteer at the Rainer Beach Art Walk Festival, 2014 (20+ hours of work), panelist at the Seattle University New Student Orientation (2013) and member of Seattle University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (2015-16).

Along with his efforts on the court and in the community, Chibuogwu is double majoring in marketing and economics, as well as obtaining a minor in psychology within the Albers School of Business and Economics.

Athletic departments and sports information directors across the country nominated the 181 NABC and the 97 WBCA student-athletes for the prestigious honor. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.

Members of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team® will be invited by Allstate, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, to the 2017 NABC Convention and 2017 NCAA Men’s Final Four® in Phoenix, where they will participate in a community service project benefitting the city. Members of the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® will be recognized during the 2017 WBCA Convention and at the 2017 NCAA Women’s Final Four® in Dallas, and will also participate in a volunteer project in the local community. Allstate is an official corporate partner of the NABC, WBCA and NCAA.
