SEATTLE (Nov. 8) - Seattle University men’s soccer heads to Orem, Utah, for the 2016 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament this weekend. The Redhawks earned a first-round bye and will play in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 11.
SU will face the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between third-seeded Air Force and sixth-seeded CSU Bakersfield. The semifinal is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Friday.
Seattle U finished the regular season with an 11-5-2 record, good for second in the WAC. It is coming off a 1-0 loss at Air Force on Nov. 5 to close out the regular season. The Redhawks beat UNLV, 4-1, in their final home match on Oct. 27. They are tied with Maryland for the longest current home win streak in Division I at 16 games.
Alex Roldan leads SU with eight goals, including six game-winners. Sergio Rivas and Jeff Rose have each tallied 13 points this season. Senior Jordan Hadden leads the WAC in save percentage (.857) and goals against average (0.57).
Air Force went 12-6-1 this season, finishing third in the league. Austin Dewing put up eight goals and five assists in 19 outings, while Tucker Bone notched four goals and six assists this year. Goalkeeper John Wendt is the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week. On the season, he has a 1.23 goals against average and a .753 save percentage.
Bakersfield went 6-12 in 2016. It beat Houston Baptist, 1-0, on Nov. 5, clinching a WAC Tournament spot. Freshman Louis Lapouge scored the game’s lone goal, sending the ‘Runners into the postseason.
Hugo Vinales paces CSU Bakersfield with four goals and four helpers. Julian Zamora scored four goals in 16 outings. Nicolas Clever started 17 matches in net, recording a 1.56 goals against average and a .740 save percentage.
