SEATTLE (Nov. 5) - Seattle University women’s basketball beat The Evergreen State College, 75-46, in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon. Four different Redhawks scored in double figures in the contest at the Connolly Complex.
SU shot 50 percent from the field and forced 29 Geoduck turnovers. The hosts lead throughout the game and held a 40-12 advantage in points in the paint.
"I thought in the beginning we executed and got some really good looks," said Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We shared the ball incredibly well, but we need to play better defense. We ran some good sets today.
Wilma Afunugo grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the game’s first possession. She followed with another layup for a 4-0 difference. After an Evergreen hoop, Alexis Montgomery scored and Claire Metoyer made a lay-in. Buckets by Kamira Sanders and Montgomery made it 12-4 midway through the period. The visitors inched closer, but Shaylin Heredia sank a three-pointer to give SU a 17-9 lead through 10 minutes.
Montgomery continued her strong play with a basket to start the second frame. Sanders and Metoyer both scored off Geoduck turnovers to make it 23-9. Kaylee Best followed with a trey to stretch the margin before Evergreen rallied. Later in the quarter, Jacinta Beckley drilled a jumper and then Montgomery scored inside. Bedoya hit a layup while being fouled with 1:42 left, giving the Redhawks a 32-13 lead. The visitors scored the final seven points of the half to trim their deficit to 12 at the break.
In the third period, Metoyer nailed a triple for a 35-20 advantage. Joana Alves then scored and then, after a Best steal, Sanders made a layup. Later in the quarter, Beckley hit another jump shot and then Best scored in the lane. Montgomery closed the frame with a layup and then pulled down an offensive board and scored again at the horn, lifting SU to a 50-33 lead through three.
Beckley and Sanders hit treys to spark the offense in the fourth, with Metoyer sinking a three of her own for a 65-41 advantage. Kaylee Biddell and Carla Bieg both scored and then Delanie Parry sank a pair of free throws as the Redhawks rolled to 25 points in the final frame.
Montgomery led with 14 points on 7-9 shooting. She also posted five rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots. Beckley contributed 12 points, including 5-6 free throw shooting. Sanders and Metoyer added 11 points apiece.
As a team, SU shot 29-58 (50 percent) from the floor and contained Evergreen to 13-45 (13-45) accuracy.
SU opens the 2016-17 regular season on Friday, Nov. 11, as Idaho visits the Connolly Complex.
