SEATTLE, Wash.(Oct. 28) - Seattle University swimming had a strong showing to open the 2016-17 season Friday night. The women beat Grand Canyon, 106-98, and Loyola Marymount, 149-52. The men fell, 110-94, to Grand Canyon. The meet was held at the Connolly Complex.
“It was a really good way to get things going,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “We had great swims all around. I thought the women performed unbelievably. They came out firing and they were ready to go with a lot of energy.”
The women swept the night, as Blaise Wittenauer-Lee won both the 400 IM and the 100 breaststroke to lead SU. The senior swam a 4:23.32 in the 400 IM and then recorded a time of 1:03.30 in the 100 breast.
Madi Lydig claimed a victory in the 1000 freestyle, logging a 10:33.51 on her way to first. Kristin Hoffman notched a 1:55.97 in the 200 freestyle, taking first place. In the 50 freestyle, Paige Treff won for the Redhawks.
The 400 free relay team of Sidney Pinger, Hoffman, Maddie Dickman, and Jayna VanStone combined to swim a 3:37.99 on their way to victory.
In the men’s competition, Grand Canyon pulled out a tight decision. For the Redhawks, Jason Klein won the 400 IM. The freshman swam the race in 4:09.92, posting the ninth-fastest time in program history.
In the 100 butterfly, Jack Baldoni and Alec Barnard finished 1-2 for the Redhawks. Baldoni swam a 49.3, with Barnard just behind at 51.2 seconds. Mitchell Crossen touched first in the 200 freestyle, while Tanner Schelling won the 100 breaststroke.
The men compete against Grand Canyon tomorrow, while the women face GCU and Loyola Marymount. The meets start at 11 a.m. at the Connolly Complex.
