DENVER – (Oct. 24) Seattle University's Kyle Bjornethun has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 17-23.
Bjornethun played all 200 minutes of Seattle U’s two games last week, leading the team to a 1-0-1 record in WAC play. He anchored the back line in both matches as the Redhawks earned a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Incarnate Word on Friday and a 3-0 shutout victory over UTRGV at home on Sunday. Along with his defensive efforts, Bjornethun also chipped in the assist on Alex Roldan’s game-winning goal against the Vaqueros.
The win at Championship Field Sunday kept the Redhawks undefeated at home this season at 6-0-0, and stretched their home win streak to 14 straight. Allowing just one goals in the two games, Seattle U continues to rank among the best in the WAC defensively, coming in second in shutouts (7), total goals allowed (14) and GAA (0.85).
Other defensive nominees: Air Force’s Trey Pujats helped the Falcons earn the shutout on Saturday against UMKC … Grand Canyon’s Kendyl Day made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over UIW on Sunday …Utah Valley’s Alex Neff helped UVU to a fifth-straight shutout on Friday against Houston Baptist.
