BOX SCORE
SEATTLE - (Oct. 20) Three second-half goals by three different Redhawks propelled the Seattle University women’s soccer team to a big 3-1 victory over UMKC in a key Western Athletic Conference game Thursday night at Championship Field.
The win helped spread the margin in the league standings between leader SU (10-5-1, 5-0-0 WAC) and the Roos (5-8-4, 2-1-2 WAC), who entered the game in second place.
A foul drawn by Isabelle Butterfield on a breakaway just inside 60 minutes got the scoring started for Seattle U. The striker was taken down just outside the 18-yard box, and the referee issued a straight red card to UMKC’s Emily Talmon.
Brie Hooks took the free kick opportunity, whipping in a shot to the right of the wall. The ball deflected off the shoulder of the player on the right side of the wall, sending the shot off course from a diving Anna Lillig and into the open net.
Karli White made it 2-0 Redhawks in the 75th minute following her own shot that was block saved by Lillig, the UMKC goalkeeper. Lillie knocked the initial White shot down to the ground and her defender attempted to clear it, but White picked off the pass just inside the top of the box and sent it back into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Natasha Howe added a third goal for SU.
UMKC got one goal back in the 78th minute as Lilly Cobb slipped a shot past Mackenzie Curry, breaking up the potential shutout. But the Roos would get no more as Seattle U reminded perfect in WAC play.
On Saturday, the Redhawks are back on Championship Field for the final time this season, hosting Chicago State. Senior Day ceremonies will precede kick off as Hooks, Howe and Mariah O’Neil will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. start.
