BOX SCORE
SEATTLE - (Oct. 8) On a rainy, windy night at Championship Field in Seattle, the Seattle University men’s soccer team used a big second half to run past Houston Baptist, 5-0, and remain undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Redhawks (8-4-0, 4-0-0 WAC) got goals from five different players and emptied the bench in the second half as 24 total players saw field time. Seattle U dominated every faucet of the match, earning a 19-4 shot advantage, and 16-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities over the Huskies (3-7-1, 1-3-0 WAC).
After a slow start as the players worked to adapt to the slippery field conditions, Seattle U finally broke through with a goal in the 35th minute.
Alex Roldan took advantage of a loose ball in the box, sending in a shot from the six-yard line for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Redhawks found their stride in the second half, beginning with a beautiful combination from Sam Langston to Julio Rubio to Sergio Rivas for the goal. Langston worked his way up the left flank, sending a long cross into the box. Rubio flicked the ball along to an onrushing Rivas who beat goalkeeper Chance Pope to his right with a left-footed shot in the 56th minute.
Five minutes later, SU was awarded a penalty kick after Rubio was taken down in the box near the left endline. Langston converted the PK to make it 3-0 Redhawks.
Freshman Medo Youssef added a fourth goal in the 84th minute and sophomore Cody Buchanan netted his first score of the season off an assist from Tyler John.
The five goals was the highest scoring output of the season for Seattle U, while the clean sheet marks the sixth of the year.
The Redhawks face another home-and-away weekend of WAC play next week, traveling to face UMKC in Kansas City on Friday, Oct. 14, followed by a home match against Grand Canyon on Sunday, Oct. 16.
