SPOKANE, Wash. - (Sept. 4) A furious comeback from a two-goal deficit would not hold as the Seattle University men’s soccer suffered a 4-2 setback at Gonzaga Sunday afternoon in Spokane, Wash.
The 16th-ranked Redhawks (1-2-0) found themselves in a 2-0 hole following Zag goals in the 21st and 26th minutes of play. But early in the second half, they would find their stride, scoring twice in a seven-minute span to pull even, 2-2.
Alex Roldan put the Redhawks on the board in the 61st minute with his first goal of the season. The junior midfielder followed a blocked shot attempt by Sam Langston and sent the ball past goalkeeper Ben Willis.
Then, at the 67:36 mark, Julio Rubio found the back of the net for the equalizer, sending in a long shot from outside the 18 out of the reach of Willis. Cameron Rohani was credited with an assist on the goal.
But with the Redhawks pressing for the go-ahead goal, it would be the Zags who would prosper. Less than three minutes after Rubio tied the score, Gonzaga’s Colton Cavey put the home team back on top with a quick shot inside the 18 off a cross from Jakob Grandlund.
The Zags (3-0-1) would add a fourth and final goal with two minutes remaining as SU had pressed forward looking to equalize.
Seattle U’s five-game, season-opening road swing continues Thursday, Sept. 8 at Harvard and Sunday, Sept. 11 at Dartmouth. The Redhawks will make their home debut Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. versus the College of Charleston.
