Friday, the Seattle University track and field team continued their quest of medaling as many individuals as possible at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships in Lawrence, Kan.
Despite rainy and windy conditions that put the meet in a delay, the Redhawks persevered.
Shaddye Melu got first place in his preliminary run of the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.74, qualifying him for finals on Saturday.
Alisa Poplawski finished in fourth place in the preliminary 800 meter run, and qualified for the finals with a time of 2:16.97.
Rebecca Lassere and Nathan McLaughlin competed in the women’s and men’s steeplechase, the only running event that held finals on Friday.
Lassere grabbed a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 11:18.93, a new personal record.
"Becca ran a really strong race and managed a personal record despite the crazy wind," head coach Trisha Steidl said.
McLaughlin finished in sixth place in the steeplechase with a time of 10:18.09.
"Becca and Nate both stepped up and gave their all," Steidl said.
The Redhawks will be back at it on Saturday for the final day of the Championships.
