SEATTLE - In an elimination match Thursday night, Seattle University softball (18-32) built a significant lead and held on for the remainder to earn a 7-3 win over UMKC (24-26) and eliminate the ‘Roos from the tournament. Earlier in the day, the Redhawks fell, 4-0, to Utah Valley (9-42).
"I'm so proud of the way we fought today," said head coach Geoff Hirai. "After the first game, to come back in the second and earn the win shows the resilience and fight that we've had all year."
The Redhawks chipped away at UMKC in the win, scoring four in the first three innings. Savannah Loomis (Roseville, Calif.) brought home Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) on a RBI double in the first before SU scored two more in the second. In the third, Breanna Timmons (Santa Maria, Calif.) doubled home Loomis, who had reached base on a leadoff walk.
UMKC cut their deficit to one in the fifth, scoring three runs on an Ashlin O’Brien two-RBI single and a fielder’s choice, but the Redhawks scored three in the top of the seventh to hold onto the win.
On the day, Geronimo led SU at the plate (3-for-5) while Andie Larkins (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up the complete game win in the circle.
SU has a second chance at UVU on Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT in another elimination game. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com and WACsports.com as well as @su_athletics and @WACsports on Twitter for all the latest updates throughout the tournament.
