Garrison Schwartz plated the first run for the ‘Lopes in the first before Thomas Lerouge knocked home a run on a base hit in the second to lead 2-0 heading into the fourth.
The Redhawks cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the fourth as Jeffrey Morgan (Auburn, Wash.) hit a full-count RBI single to bring home Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.), who had reached base on a two-out double.
Brandon Smith hit a two-run double in the sixth to extend Grand Canyon’s lead out to three, 4-1, before the Redhawks tied the game in the eighth and ninth innings on Lucas Denney (Goldendale, Wash.) and Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.) home runs.
Tied 4-4 at the end of regulation, Grand Canyon would score four runs, two on SU fielding errors, to take a 8-4 lead. In the bottom of the frame, SU would advance runners to first and second but a final flyout ended the Redhawks’ sweep attempt.
Denney led SU at the plate (2-for-4) with two RBI and a run on the day.
The Redhawks host Washington on Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 5 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash.
